In a time filled with so much technology and innovation, it’s nice to get back to basics. This week let us focus on “taking it way back” to a time where life was simpler and more rustic. When you think of rustic, images of a warm fire and comforting, cozy spaces come to mind. Let’s explore how to achieve that “Timeless” feeling.
Here are some industry trick to get a rustic cottage floor to add some character to your interior, without having to change your décor.
Color and Finishes

Although choosing your flooring color is one of the most fun parts of the Fall Design experience, you don’t have to worry about toning down a more eclectic choice in fear of losing that rustic touch. Although muted, or grayed out tones like the one’s featured above in our “OR” collection work perfectly, you can still achieve the look with red and yellow undertones – while greyed out tones can make a floor look aged (in a great way), red and yellow tones give a warm appeal, giving your house a cozy ambiance.

Although the modern cottage featured above looks fabulous, too much shine and smaller plank sizes take away from the “cottage feel” and gives the space a more modern vibe. If you want to avoid an “upgraded” look, avoid shiny finishes and small plank sizes (and stay far away from laminate). Shine and precision take away from the old-world feeling.

Beautifully Distressed

For a country cottage look (even in a modern space), instead of precision, aim for a distressed look. For distressed flooring (I recommend hand-distressed), each plank will be 100% unique. Like walking through a forest, each piece of wood tells its own story, while still working together harmoniously. Each plank should be completely unique, and you should opt for larger plank sizes. It’s all about embracing the perfection of imperfection!
Go big or go home!

The best part about hand-distressed flooring is scratches and basic wear-and-tear over the years will only add to the awesome character and personality of your floor. Style and family-friendly functionality! If the inevitable spill, scuff or accident happens, a quick wire brushing solves your problem.

If you’re looking for a touch of rustic appeal, but aren’t ready to dive in fully, our TuCasa collection offers a more contemporary alternative. Cottage on the beach! Hand-distressed, but stained in custom shades like breezy blues, modern whites, and dreamy browns.
